    An L(^2) representation of the continuum in heavy particle collisions

    This thesis is concerned with the use of L(^2) or square integrable functions as a representation of the electronic continua in ion-atom collisions. An exact representation of the continuum states is considered for comparison. The functions are optimised in an attempt to remove some of the arbitrary features present in such calculations. The original work of this thesis is mainly concerned with the calculation of single electron processes in collisions between He(^2+)ions and neutral lithium atoms. The cross sections for single electron capture were calculated in a close-coupled approximation, using the semi-classical impact parameter method. A maximum of thirty-two atomic orbitals with plane-wave translational factors attached were centred upon the target and projectile. Satisfactory agreement with experimental data is obtained over the He(^2+)laboratory energy range from 8 to 2000 keV. The results show the importance of the continuum over a restricted range of impact energies. The rest of the research is concerned with direct excitation and ionisation in the same collision system and results are given for He"^' laboratory energies between 20 and 6000 keV. The calculations used a similar close-coupled approximation with up to sixty-five basis states. The best ionisation cross sections reproduce the experimental data apart from a normalization factor. The excitation results were more sensitive to basis set choice. The ionisation cross sections were also investigated using an exact representation of the continuum states, using the First Born Approximation and a t-matrix approximation in an attempt to improve upon the results. The relationship between the present calculations and some previous methods are discussed and suggestions for future work are made. These are the first close-coupled estimates of ionisation for this sytem and show that contributions from target d- and f- states dominate the ionisation cross section around its maximum

    This paper introduces the theoretical framework and design rationale for an innovative undergraduate module entitled “Living and Working on the Web” at the University of Southampton. The module design is based on the principles of collaborative social learning and the co-construction of knowledge. At the workshop a model of best practice will be presented, featuring a ‘blog-comment-reflect-feedback’ cycle, which has derived from the synthesis of relevant literature and which will be reflected upon through an informal content analysis of the students’ blogs

    Modelling chemistry in the nocturnal boundary layer above tropical rainforest and a generalised effective nocturnal ozone deposition velocity for sub-ppbv NOx conditions

    Measurements of atmospheric composition have been made over a remote rainforest landscape. A box model has previously been demonstrated to model the observed daytime chemistry well. However the box model is unable to explain the nocturnal measurements of relatively high [NO] and [O3], but relatively low observed [NO2]. It is shown that a one-dimensional (1-D) column model with simple O3 -NOx chemistry and a simple representation of vertical transport is able to explain the observed nocturnal concentrations and predict the likely vertical profiles of these species in the nocturnal boundary layer (NBL). Concentrations of tracers carried over from the end of the night can affect the atmospheric chemistry of the following day. To ascertain the anomaly introduced by using the box model to represent the NBL, vertically-averaged NBL concentrations at the end of the night are compared between the 1-D model and the box model. It is found that, under low to medium [NOx] conditions (NOx <1 ppbv), a simple parametrisation can be used to modify the box model deposition velocity of ozone, in order to achieve good agreement between the box and 1-D models for these end-of-night concentrations of NOx and O3. This parametrisation would could also be used in global climate-chemistry models with limited vertical resolution near the surface. Box-model results for the following day differ significantly if this effective nocturnal deposition velocity for ozone is implemented; for instance, there is a 9% increase in the following day’s peak ozone concentration. However under medium to high [NOx] conditions (NOx > 1 ppbv), the effect on the chemistry due to the vertical distribution of the species means no box model can adequately represent chemistry in the NBL without modifying reaction rate constants

    Seasonal and diurnal trends in concentrations and fluxes of volatile organic compounds in central London

    Concentrations and fluxes of seven volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured between August and December 2012 at a rooftop site in central London as part of the ClearfLo project (Clean Air for London). VOC concentrations were quantified using a proton transfer reaction mass spectrometer (PTR-MS) and fluxes were calculated using a virtual disjunct eddy covariance technique. The median VOC fluxes, including aromatics, oxygenated compounds and isoprene, ranged from 0.07 to 0.33 mgm&#x100000;^-2 h^-&#x100000;1. Median mixing ratios were 7.3 ppb for methanol and < 1 ppb for the other compounds. Strong relationships were observed between the fluxes and concentrations of some VOCs with traffic density and between the fluxes and concentrations ofisoprene and oxygenated compounds with photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and temperature. An estimated 50–90% of the fluxes of aromatic VOCs were attributable to traffic activity, which showed little seasonal variation, suggesting that boundary layer effects or possibly advected pollutionmay be the primary causes of increased concentrations of aromatics in winter. Isoprene, methanol and acetaldehyde fluxes and concentrations in August and September showed high correlations with PAR and temperature, when fluxes andconcentrations were largest suggesting that biogenic sources contributed to their fluxes. Modelled biogenic isoprene fluxes from urban vegetation using the Guenther et al. (1995) algorithm agreed well with measured fluxes in August andSeptember. Comparisons of estimated annual benzene emissions from both the London and the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventories agreed well with measured benzene fluxes. Flux footprint analysis indicated emission sourceswere localised and that boundary layer dynamics and source strengths were responsible for temporal and spatial VOC flux and concentration variability during the measurement period

    PMN J1632-0033: A new gravitationally lensed quasar

    We report the discovery of a gravitationally lensed quasar resulting from our survey for lenses in the southern sky. Radio images of PMN J1632-0033 with the VLA and ATCA exhibit two compact, flat-spectrum components with separation 1.47" and flux density ratio 13.2. Images with the HST reveal the optical counterparts to the radio components and also the lens galaxy. An optical spectrum of the bright component, obtained with the first Magellan telescope, reveals quasar emission lines at redshift 3.42. Deeper radio images with MERLIN and the VLBA reveal a faint third radio component located near the center of the lens galaxy, which is either a third image of the background quasar or faint emission from the lens galaxy.Comment: 21 pp., including 4 figures; thoroughly revised in light of new MERLIN/HST data; accepted for publication in A

    No relationship between intelligence and facial attractiveness in a large, genetically informative sample

    Theories in both evolutionary and social psychology suggest that a positive correlation should exist between facial attractiveness and general intelligence, and several empirical observations appear to corroborate this expectation. Using highly reliable measures of facial attractiveness and IQ in a large sample of identical and fraternal twins and their siblings, we found no evidence for a phenotypic correlation between these traits. Likewise, neither the genetic nor the environmental latent factor correlations were statistically significant. We supplemented our analyses of new data with a simple meta-analysis that found evidence of publication bias among past studies of the relationship between facial attractiveness and intelligence. In view of these results, we suggest that previously published reports may have overestimated the strength of the relationship and that the theoretical bases for the predicted attractiveness–intelligence correlation may need to be reconsidered

    Functional requirements for a Samd14-capping protein complex in stress erythropoiesis

    Acute anemia induces rapid expansion of erythroid precursors and accelerated differentiation to replenish erythrocytes. Paracrine signals—involving cooperation between stem cell factor (SCF)/Kit signaling and other signaling inputs—are required for the increased erythroid precursor activity in anemia. Our prior work revealed that the sterile alpha motif (SAM) domain 14 (Samd14) gene increases the regenerative capacity of the erythroid system in a mouse genetic model and promotes stress-dependent Kit signaling. However, the mechanism underlying Samd14’s role in stress erythropoiesis is unknown. We identified a protein-protein interaction between Samd14 and the α- and β-heterodimers of the F-actin capping protein (CP) complex. Knockdown of the CP β subunit increased erythroid maturation in murine ex vivo cultures and decreased colony forming potential of stress erythroid precursors. In a genetic complementation assay for Samd14 activity, our results revealed that the Samd14-CP interaction is a determinant of erythroid precursor cell levels and function. Samd14-CP promotes SCF/Kit signaling in CD71med spleen erythroid precursors. Given the roles of Kit signaling in hematopoiesis and Samd14 in Kit pathway activation, this mechanism may have pathological implications in acute/chronic anemia

    PMN J1838-3427: A new gravitationally lensed quasar

    We report the discovery of a new double-image quasar that was found during a search for gravitational lenses in the southern sky. Radio source PMN J1838-3427 is composed of two flat-spectrum components with separation 1", flux density ratio 14:1 and matching spectral indices, in VLA and VLBA images. Ground-based BRI images show the optical counterpart (total I=18.6) is also double with the same separation and position angle as the radio components. An HST/WFPC2 image reveals the lens galaxy. The optical flux ratio (27:1) is higher than the radio value probably due to differential extinction of the components by the lens galaxy. An optical spectrum of the bright component contains quasar emission lines at z=2.78 and several absorption features, including prominent Ly-alpha absorption. The lens galaxy redshift could not be measured but is estimated to be z=0.36 +/- 0.08. The image configuration is consistent with the simplest plausible models for the lens potential. The flat radio spectrum and observed variability of PMN J1838-3427 suggest the time delay between flux variations of the components is measurable, and could thus provide an independent measurement of H_0.Comment: 23 pages, incl. 6 figures, to appear in A.J.; replaced with accepted version; minor changes to text, improved figure
